A remarkable three-dimensional model of Agadir, a prominent city in Morocco, has been crafted using images captured by the Russian satellite InnoSat16. This significant achievement was reported by Russian media outlets on September 11, highlighting the innovative capabilities of satellite technology in urban modeling. The project was executed by Geoscan, a Russian company that specializes in satellite imagery and photogrammetry, which is the science of making measurements from photographs. By utilizing cutting-edge techniques, Geoscan reconstructed the shapes of buildings and landscapes, resulting in a detailed 3D visualization of Agadir. Furthermore, these same images were leveraged to create a simulated video that offers a bird’s-eye view of the city.

Advancements in Satellite Technology

Geoscan’s initiative underscores the efficacy of the satellite’s guidance and stabilization systems, which provided high-quality images suitable for further territorial analysis from low Earth orbit. The InnoSat16 satellite, launched on July 25, 2025, from Russia’s Vostochny Cosmodrome, marks a technological milestone as it is the first CubeSat of its kind to be placed into orbit by the country. Equipped with a sophisticated panchromatic camera developed by NPO Lepton, the satellite is capable of capturing black-and-white images of the Earth’s surface at a remarkable resolution of up to 2.5 meters per pixel from an altitude of approximately 500 kilometers. Since its inception in 2021, Geoscan has successfully launched 17 small satellites dedicated to various applications, including scientific research, communication technology trials, and Earth observation.
