Innovative Waterbox Technology Revolutionizes Afforestation in Morocco's Arid Regions

Revolutionizing Afforestation with Waterbox Technology

As part of the execution of the "Forests of Morocco 2020-2030" strategy, the National Agency for Water and Forests has introduced an innovative solution for afforestation in arid areas through the Waterbox device during a field visit to the Souss-Massa region this Monday. This technology is designed to optimize water consumption and adapt to the harshest climatic conditions, which is increasingly essential in light of the escalating droughts and declining water resources.

The agency emphasizes that, "With the worsening drought waves and the reduction of water resources, the success of afforestation programs has become a major challenge, especially in dry and semi-dry areas." In response to these challenges, the Waterbox device offers a pioneering solution that reduces water usage, ensures a higher survival rate of seedlings, and enhances their ability to adapt to extreme climatic conditions.

How Waterbox Works

The Waterbox is a smart water reservoir capable of collecting natural moisture from rainfall and dew. It gradually distributes water at the root level, protecting seedlings from evaporation and heat while promoting deep root growth. This system allows for continuous, controlled irrigation that adapts to the needs of each plant, ensuring optimal growth and sustainability.

Field trials conducted in the Souss-Massa region have demonstrated exceptional performance, with seedling survival rates exceeding 95 percent and improved growth metrics, all while significantly reducing irrigation needs. Following several field experiments, the National Agency for Water and Forests has begun developing a locally manufactured model of the Waterbox, which has helped reduce equipment costs, tailor the technology to national climatic conditions, and promote its widespread adoption. To date, over 1,200 hectares in the Souss-Massa region have been afforested using this innovative technique.
