Janice Busuttil Set to Rejoin Rabat Local Council
Janice Busuttil is preparing to reclaim her position within the Rabat Local Council after being confirmed as the sole nominee in a forthcoming casual election. This election is necessitated by the passing of the esteemed Nazju Cassar, a long-serving councillor who dedicated his life to public service until his recent death at the age of 74. Cassar’s legacy in the council is noteworthy; he was a foundational member since its establishment and served as deputy mayor from 1994 to 2003 during a period when the Nationalist Party held the majority. Despite the Labour Party's dominance in the council in recent years, Cassar consistently secured re-election and was serving as the minority leader at the time of his death.
Busuttil's Journey and Prospects
Janice Busuttil first entered the political arena in 2019 when she contested the local council elections but did not secure a seat. However, she made a comeback in 2021 through a casual election, marking her entry into local governance. In the 2024 elections, Busuttil saw a significant increase in support, garnering 439 first-count votes, though she was the only candidate from the Nationalist Party not to be elected in Rabat. With her upcoming candidacy, her return to the local council appears highly likely. Although she is currently the only candidate, she must still achieve over 50% of the votes that Cassar received to formally take his place. Given the historical voting patterns in Malta, which often see voters selecting all candidates from their preferred party, it is overwhelmingly probable that she will meet this requirement. With her experience and the political landscape favoring her party, Janice Busuttil seems well-positioned for a successful return.
