Jerusalem's Youth Experience Unforgettable Moments in Morocco
On the dawn of August 27, 2026, a group of 50 children from Jerusalem returned to their hometown after an enriching two-week experience at the 17th edition of the "Lighthouse of Peace" summer camp, held in Morocco. This camp, organized by the Jerusalem Welfare Agency, saw participants aged between 11 and 14 engage in a variety of activities designed to foster relaxation, entertainment, and cultural exchange. The program took place from August 12 to August 26 and included visits to major cities such as Rabat, Casablanca, Tangier, Tetouan, Chefchaouen, and Mdiq.
The children partook in both recreational and educational excursions, allowing them to learn about Moroccan culture while establishing friendships with their Moroccan peers. According to participant Sanar Azhaiman, the experience was incredibly beneficial, highlighting new skills, games, and hobbies learned during their time in Morocco. "We will always remember this wonderful experience," she stated.
The Jerusalem Welfare Agency expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the summer camp and extended thanks to King Mohammed VI of Morocco for hosting the event. Talin Shawamra’s mother shared her daughter's positive experience, noting the independence Talin gained by exploring new places away from home. "I appreciate the program coordinators; all the guides were supportive and kept us informed about the children's activities throughout the camp," she remarked.
Similarly, the mother of student Mohammed Al-Basiti described her son's experience as "fantastic," comparing his joy at participating in the camp to the happiness she felt during his high school graduation. The daily photos and videos he sent home depicted the genuine affection and joy he encountered in Morocco. Karim Dawood's father noted that his son communicated how beautiful the visit was, contributing to his ambition and personal development as a talented Quran memorizer and skilled football player. Karim shared insights about their visit to the Royal Guard in Rabat, where they participated in workshops learning about the tailoring of the guards' uniforms and the evolution of Moroccan flags.
Karim commented, "It was a beautiful experience, and we thank King Mohammed VI for the wonderful hospitality, as well as the Jerusalem Welfare Agency for nurturing our dreams and aspirations." Student Farah Hadmi reflected on her journey, which allowed her to explore historic sites in Rabat and marvel at the picturesque blue alleys of Chefchaouen. Since the inception of the summer camp in 2008, a total of 850 children from various neighborhoods of the holy city have benefitted from this initiative, accompanied by 85 supervisors, who have collectively experienced the profound solidarity of Moroccans with the Palestinian cause.
