Juan Imhoff Begins His Coaching Journey with Morocco 7's
In a significant milestone in his career, the legendary wing of Los Pumas, Juan Imhoff, has been appointed as the head coach of the Morocco 7’s national team. This role marks his inaugural venture into international coaching following his retirement in 2025 from Duendes Rugby Club. The announcement came shortly after the Moroccan rugby federation expressed its desire to return to the pinnacle of African rugby competition, highlighting the urgency and ambition behind this new chapter.
Imhoff's appointment is complemented by the inclusion of former international player Nabil Jelti, who will serve as the technical director of the team. Together, they will face the formidable challenge of preparing the squad for a clear and ambitious goal: qualifying for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. A key test in this journey will be the African Men's Rugby Sevens Championship, which is set to take place for the third consecutive year on the island of Mauritius, where South Africa 7s will arrive as the reigning champions.
The rugby community has rallied around Imhoff, offering him encouragement and support as he embarks on this new path. Gonzalo Quesada, the head coach of Los Pumas, took to social media to extend his best wishes, stating, “It’s time to start writing the beautiful lines of this new chapter. You have much to teach, and you will do very well.” Additionally, Gastón Revol, the historic captain of Los Pumas 7s, also conveyed his congratulations, saying, “Great job, Juan. Wishing you all the success, my friend.”
It is worth noting that Morocco has a history in international rugby sevens, having participated in the 1997 World Cup in Hong Kong, as well as the prestigious Hong Kong Sevens in 1992, 2002, and 2016. Furthermore, the team has won the Arab Championship four times and achieved third place in the African Championship in 2015.
