Jürgen Klopp on the Verge of Becoming Germany's National Team Coach

Jürgen Klopp arrived at the summit meeting with the DFB officials in New York like a tourist, only to leave almost as the new head coach of the German national team. Sporting a light-colored outfit, casual sneakers, and sunglasses tucked into his shirt, the 59-year-old was captured in photographs by the "Bild" newspaper during his first direct negotiation round with DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke at a hotel near John F. Kennedy Airport. After more than four hours of discussions, both parties appeared to be nearing an agreement. The German Football Association (DFB) reported the following day that a constructive exchange had resulted in an understanding of essential points for a potential contract, with further talks to resume the following week.

However, there remains a hurdle to overcome. The succession plan for former coach Julian Nagelsmann is set in motion, contingent on one condition: both sides are optimistic that the negotiations will conclude successfully, pending an agreement with Klopp's current employer, Red Bull, where he is contracted until 2029. There have already been numerous positive signals regarding this issue.

As was the case with the premature termination of Nagelsmann's contract following the national team's disappointing World Cup performance in the United States, any agreement with Klopp will also require final approval in a joint meeting of the supervisory board and the shareholders' meeting of DFB GmbH & Co. KG, which is yet to be scheduled. Klopp was supported in negotiations by his advisor Marc Kosicke, who has been managing his interests for many years and is recognized in the football scene as a savvy negotiator, also handling Klopp's sponsorship contracts.

During the airport meeting, there was much to discuss and clarify privately, but none of the main figures made public statements afterward. Watzke, a close confidant of Klopp, had previously remarked that the succession for Nagelsmann, who stepped down under pressure, should not merely involve a name change.

The Role of National Team Coach

Interestingly, the profile of the national team coach was outlined during the World Cup days by Jürgen Klinsmann, who served as head coach from 2004 to 2006 and led Germany to a successful World Cup campaign. Klinsmann emphasized the myriad roles a head coach must fulfill during a tournament, describing the position as fundamentally one of people management. "It starts with player puzzles, managing the team, dealing with families, and engaging with the association itself," Klinsmann explained. A multitude of interests must be reconciled.

He continued, "Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't go well, you take responsibility, just as Julian Nagelsmann did. He accepted responsibility and said, 'I didn't do a good job. I will step aside to make way for the next coach.'" Now, Klopp aims to assume that responsibility for German football and particularly for the national team, demonstrating through his coaching stints at Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool that he can lead teams to titles and inspire players to achieve peak performance. Although Klopp has never managed a national team, he embodies Klinsmann's essential requirement of being a "people manager." He seems to view former team coach Rudi Völler as a valuable asset in this transition, as Völler will remain in his role as DFB sports director until the European Championship in 2028.

DFB Officials' Journey to New York

Neuendorf and Watzke traveled from Frankfurt to the U.S. metropolis for this crucial meeting. For the president, it was vital to establish a face-to-face dialogue. Why meet in the U.S.? Because New York serves as Klopp's base during the World Cup, where he works as an expert for MagentaTV, observing and analyzing tournament matches. Both parties had previously expressed their commitment to each other during the Nagelsmann separation, and many topics had already been discussed in advance. Although the DFB's announcement did not specify the contract duration, it indicated that the new contract would not be significantly higher than that of Nagelsmann, who reportedly earned around seven million euros per year.

One critical factor remains: Klopp's commitment to Red Bull. CEO Oliver Mintzlaff is expected to travel to the U.S. during the World Cup final week. If the previously reported details hold true, Klopp will relinquish his role at the beverage company but may remain a brand ambassador. This arrangement is viewed critically by traditionalists within the DFB.

There is no longer an expectation for an extended delay in Klopp's appointment. However, there is still no urgency, as the national team's first matches post-World Cup are not scheduled until late September. The newly configured international match window will include four matches against the Netherlands, Serbia, and Greece within just ten days, meaning Klopp will have to dive right into the action as the new national team coach.
