Kenya Backs Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for Sahara, Strengthening Bilateral Ties

On Thursday, Kenya announced its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan regarding the Sahara, emphasizing that such a plan should be implemented under Moroccan sovereignty. This significant endorsement signals a stronger public alignment with Rabat’s position following recent bilateral discussions held in Nairobi. The commitment was articulated during the inaugural session of the Morocco-Kenya Joint Cooperation Commission, which was co-chaired by Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Kenyan Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi.

In a joint communiqué issued after the meeting, Kenya expressed its recognition of the increasing international consensus surrounding Morocco’s autonomy proposal, dubbing it the "only credible and realistic solution" to the ongoing Sahara dispute. The Kenyan government characterized the initiative as a sustainable approach and pledged to collaborate with other like-minded nations to ensure its effective implementation.

Additionally, Kenya welcomed the U.N. Security Council Resolution 2797, which was adopted on October 31, 2025. This resolution extended the mandate of MINURSO and endorsed negotiations based on Morocco’s autonomy proposal, aiming for a resolution that is just, lasting, and mutually acceptable to all parties involved. Nairobi reiterated its support for the ongoing efforts of the U.N. Secretary-General and his personal envoy in advancing discussions on this matter.
