Las Palmas Aims to Enhance Maritime Trade with Agadir
The authorities of Las Palmas have expressed a strong interest in establishing a direct maritime connection with Agadir, aiming to facilitate faster and more cost-effective transportation of fish products between the Canary Islands and Morocco, thereby eliminating the need for lengthy routes through the Spanish mainland. This initiative is focused on enhancing trade efficiency while reducing costs associated with transporting seafood.
A recent working visit from a delegation from Agadir to the port of Las Palmas marked a significant step in this potential collaboration. This meeting followed an earlier visit by officials from the Canary Islands to Agadir, indicating a mutual interest in exploring practical avenues for cooperation. Both parties are now assessing how they can complement each other's operations and strengthen their maritime ties.
Beatriz Calzada, the president of the Las Palmas port authority, emphasized the necessity of establishing a direct line with Agadir for the transport of fishery products. She noted that avoiding transit through the Spanish mainland could lead to significant reductions in transport costs and shorter transit times, ultimately benefiting consumers with lower prices for fish products.
In addition to fish trade, Las Palmas sees further opportunities in the shipping sector. According to Calzada, the Agadir port fleet is in need of modernization, and Las Palmas aims to leverage its expertise in ship repairs, which is a crucial sector within its port operations.
During the visit, the delegation from the Souss-Massa region received insights into the operational workings of the Las Palmas port and its key activities. Reports from the Spanish trade newspaper Diario del Puerto indicate that both ports are keenly exploring concrete collaborations, particularly in the areas of fishing, logistics, and ship maintenance.
