Legal Developments in the Moroccan Newborn Smuggling Case in Italy

New Legal Proceedings in the Moroccan Newborn Smuggling Case

A significant legal case has emerged surrounding the illegal transport of a Moroccan newborn that took place in October 2024, involving a couple accused of orchestrating the child's journey from Tangier to Genoa. Recent developments in Italy have revealed that the individuals involved are taking divergent approaches in their legal battles, as reported by Corriere Torino.

On March 10, the 42-year-old woman who accompanied the infant sought a plea deal, proposing a two-year sentence. In this agreement, prosecutors have consented to withdraw the allegations of financial motivation behind her actions, thereby lessening the gravity of the charges and allowing for the possibility of a suspended sentence. In contrast, her 65-year-old husband has chosen to contest the charges in court. Described by investigators as having a professional background in the clandestine transport of individuals, he insists that he was merely following his wife's lead, despite his opposition to the illegal act of transporting the infant.

Additionally, two other individuals, a Moroccan couple who cared for the child between December 2024 and the police intervention by the Flying Squad, opted for a swift trial process. The prosecution has requested ten-month prison sentences for their roles in facilitating the illegal transport.

Currently, the child, who is now approximately one and a half years old, is receiving temporary foster care from a couple in the Turin region, with adoption proceedings ongoing. This case traces back to October 2024, when the couple allegedly concealed the newborn in a shopping bag to smuggle her onto a ferry bound for Genoa. Upon their arrival in Turin, it is reported that they entrusted the baby to another Moroccan couple while they sought out a potential adopter willing to pay for the child. The infant was eventually discovered by law enforcement after several weeks of surveillance and is now under the protection of social services.
