Local Authorities Crack Down on Speculators in Livestock Markets
In a decisive move to enforce government regulations, local authorities in Fes apprehended five intermediaries and speculators at the livestock market in the Bensouda area on Wednesday. This action followed suspicions regarding their involvement in illicit speculation practices and their attempts to manipulate the pricing of sacrificial animals outside of legal parameters. The authorities were alerted to the fact that these individuals were obstructing farmers and livestock breeders as they entered the market, pressuring them to sell their sheep at unreasonably low prices. Subsequently, these animals were resold to consumers at significantly marked-up prices, which negatively impacted the purchasing power of local citizens.
This crackdown aligns with recent measures implemented by the government, under the directive of Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, aimed at prohibiting unauthorized brokerage and mediation activities within livestock markets across the country. The government’s initiative seeks to prevent the resale of sacrificial animals in official spaces to ensure price stability as the Eid al-Adha holiday approaches.
Specialized local committees in Fes, in collaboration with public force elements, have initiated sweeping campaigns within the market to enforce order and monitor commercial transactions. The objective is to encourage direct sales between producers and consumers, thereby ensuring transparency in financial dealings during this critical period leading up to the festival of sacrifice.
