From Marblehead to France: The Journey of Grab The Bagel

In the picturesque town of Marblehead, Massachusetts, Grab The Bagel has carved out a niche with its delectable offerings over the past three years. Owner Dave Aldrich has successfully cultivated a loyal customer base on the North Shore, but recently, he experienced a moment that propelled his small business onto the international stage. Aldrich received a rather extraordinary order for three dozen bagels and cream cheese, which at first seemed like a typical request. However, the destination of these bagels would soon reveal a remarkable connection to the world of sports.

The order was destined for the family of Neil El Aynaoui, a prominent midfielder for the Italian Serie A club Roma and the Moroccan national soccer team. El Aynaoui played a pivotal role in Morocco's impressive quarterfinal run during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, participating in six matches, including a notable victory against Canada in the Round of 16, before Morocco faced elimination at the hands of France in the quarterfinals. While El Aynaoui's family was in the Boston area supporting him, they decided to indulge in Aldrich’s bagels and were so enamored that they requested a supply to take back to Nancy, France.

“I couldn’t believe it at first,” Aldrich recalled, reflecting on the moment he learned where the bagels were headed. “They told me they were taking them to France.” With great care, he vacuum-sealed the bagels in his signature packaging and ensured the order was delivered to the family just as they were preparing to depart for Logan International Airport. Upon arrival in France, the bagels became a delightful treat for El Aynaoui and his family, further solidifying the connection between this small Marblehead shop and the international soccer community.

Creating Joy Through Bagels

This unique order not only marked a significant milestone for Grab The Bagel, which recently celebrated its third anniversary, but it also exemplified Aldrich’s humble mission when he first opened his shop. He has always aimed to create a bagel that would evoke the simple response, “This is a good bagel,” rather than striving for accolades or expansive growth. His true ambition lies in spreading happiness through his culinary creations.

Aldrich recognizes that, similar to pizza or Chinese food, bagels can elicit strong opinions, yet he never anticipated the broad reach his products would achieve. Over the years, he has shipped orders to customers across the United States, including states as far-flung as California, Oregon, Florida, New York, and Alaska. His presence at local farmers markets in Marblehead and Swampscott has proven equally successful, often resulting in sold-out weekends.

However, the order for El Aynaoui’s family held a special significance for Aldrich, who likened the endorsement to receiving a blessing from the Pope at the Vatican, stating it made him feel as if he had entered the “Promised Land of bagels.” Despite the newfound attention and recognition, Aldrich remains deeply committed to his local community, often engaging in what he calls “Random Acts of Bagelness.” Through this initiative, he surprises local residents, businesses, and organizations with complimentary bagels and cream cheese, bringing joy and gratitude to those around him. His recent delivery to Marblehead Bank elicited a heartfelt response, reinforcing the sense of community he cherishes.

Aldrich’s philosophy centers on creating moments of happiness, particularly for children, who he believes deserve joy and excitement. He operates under the mantra, “Happy children, happy world,” and finds immense satisfaction in seeing young faces light up as they approach his stand at the farmers markets. “It’s way more than a bagel,” he emphasizes, recognizing the emotional connections that food can foster.

Among his most loyal customers is Cephise, a cousin of El Aynaoui, who has embraced the Grab The Bagel experience. She is set to feature in a new video promoting the Random Acts of Bagelness campaign, highlighting the initiative's mission to spread joy and comfort, especially to those facing mental health challenges. Aldrich is passionate about using his bagels as a means to deliver unrestrained happiness and solace in a world that often feels chaotic. “If we can deliver unconditional and unbridled joy, especially to folks struggling with mental health issues, then our job is complete,” he states, emphasizing that the bagels are simply a vessel for this purpose.

Reflecting on his journey, Aldrich expresses deep gratitude to the Jewish Community Center and the community members who have supported his business from its inception. “I’ve got the best customers on the planet,” he proudly asserts, acknowledging that their loyalty has been a cornerstone of Grab The Bagel’s success.
