Lorenzo Sonego's Injury Update: Optimistic Return to Tennis in Marrakech

Lorenzo Sonego Aims for Comeback After Injury

After an extended hiatus from professional tennis due to a wrist injury, Italian player Lorenzo Sonego is optimistic about making a comeback. Having been sidelined for two months, Sonego, who is currently ranked 61st in the world, has expressed his eagerness to return to the court during the upcoming Marrakech tournament, scheduled from March 30 to April 5. The 30-year-old athlete initially believed he could return sooner for significant events such as the Indian Wells Masters 1000, the Phoenix Challenger, and the Miami Masters 1000, but his recovery has not progressed as quickly as hoped, forcing him to withdraw from these competitions.

Insights from Sonego on His Recovery Journey

In a recent interview with SuperTennis, Sonego shared insights into his injury and recovery process. He stated, "My wrist issue is improving, I'm on the right track. Unfortunately, I had to stop for a while, but I've resumed training. I hope to be back in Marrakech. I thought I could return as early as Rio. I had some minor wrist problems before, but they never lasted more than a week. This time, it's a bit more serious." He elaborated that the injury initially began during a tournament in Hong Kong, leading to a challenging recovery, particularly after he pushed through to compete in the Australian Open. Although he still experiences some discomfort and is not yet at full capacity, Sonego remains hopeful about his performance on clay courts in the near future.
