Discover 'Mauvais Temps': A Cinematic Journey Through Family Struggles
The highly anticipated film "Mauvais Temps," directed by Moroccan filmmaker Madane El Ghazouani, is scheduled for a tour across multiple cities in Morocco from March 25 to April 3, as announced by the French Institute of Morocco. This cinematic venture invites audiences to engage with the film through a series of nine screenings and discussions, providing viewers with an opportunity to delve into the themes and narratives presented in El Ghazouani's debut feature film.
According to the announcement from the French Institute, the film will be showcased in the presence of the director himself, alongside actress Hajar Graigaa and actor Abdenbi Benniwi, kicking off the tour in Kénitra on March 25. Following this premiere, the film will travel to Fès, Oujda, Meknès, Rabat, Casablanca, El Jadida, and Marrakech, before concluding its journey in Agadir on April 3.
"Mauvais Temps" offers an immersive exploration of a family narrative where everyday tensions uncover social fractures and the unspoken truths of childhood. Inspired by El Ghazouani's personal experiences, the film tells the poignant story of Ayoub, a young boy whose life takes a drastic turn when his family's apartment is divided due to a heritage dispute. This division forces the family to live in a part of the home without basic amenities, turning each daily task into a silent challenge.
This unique situation allows the film to sensitively explore universal themes such as dignity, intimacy, and precariousness. Through the lens of material constraints, the narrative highlights how the struggles of daily life impact familial relationships and shape individual paths. The choice of the title "Mauvais Temps" is significant; it refers to a popular expression within Moroccan working-class circles, symbolizing times of scarce work and uncertain income. This social dimension weaves throughout the story, enhancing the film's realistic and engaged portrayal of contemporary issues.
Presented at the 25th edition of the National Film Festival of Tangier, "Mauvais Temps" garnered three awards, including Best First Work, a Special Jury Prize (tied with Nabil Ayouch's "Everybody Loves Touda"), and the Best Actor award for Abdenbi Benniwi's portrayal of the father. The film has also been showcased at the Marrakech International Film Festival, further solidifying its presence on the international cinematic stage. As reported by femmesdumaroc.com.
