Final Stages of the Water Supply Project from Safi to Marrakech
The ambitious project aimed at transporting desalinated water from Safi to Marrakech is reaching its final stages, with construction progress reported at an impressive 98%. According to data obtained from the regional multi-service company Marrakech-Safi, this initiative is one of the largest water supply projects in the region, designed to enhance the provision of potable water and address the increasing pressure on water resources in the Greater Marrakech area. The project is set to benefit over one million residents in the city of Marrakech, as well as in surrounding areas such as Tamesloht and Ourika.
Spanning approximately 185 kilometers and backed by a budget of around 4.2 billion dirhams, fully funded by the state, this project features three major pumping stations capable of delivering a flow rate of 3.2 cubic meters per second. These pumping stations are interconnected by meticulously designed steel pipes, ensuring safe and sustainable water transportation under various conditions. The water transported will originate from the seawater desalination plant in Safi and will be delivered to a main reservoir with a capacity of 10,000 cubic meters, located about 18 kilometers from the center of Marrakech, before being distributed throughout the supply network.
Once operational, the project will enable the transfer of 80 million cubic meters of water annually. The rollout will occur in two phases, with the first phase commencing in April, allowing for the transfer of 40 million cubic meters. An increase in the flow rate by an additional 40 million cubic meters is expected in June.
