Mali's Continued Support for Morocco's Autonomy Plan
On September 24, 2026, Mali's Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdoulaye Diop, reiterated the crucial stance taken by the Malian government on April 10, 2026. In this declaration, Mali expressed its strong support for Morocco's proposed autonomy plan, which it considers the only serious and credible basis for resolving the long-standing dispute regarding Western Sahara. Minister Diop emphasized that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the most realistic solution to this complex issue.
This declaration was highlighted during a press statement following his meeting with Morocco's Foreign Affairs Minister, Nasser Bourita, on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. Diop further affirmed Bamako's complete backing for UN Security Council Resolution 2797, describing it as a significant step towards a definitive resolution of the regional dispute concerning Moroccan Sahara.
"We hope that this General Assembly can facilitate the realization and implementation of this initiative," stated the Malian foreign minister. He underscored the importance of mutual respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both Morocco and Mali, which has fostered a cooperative relationship rooted in shared interests.
Moreover, Diop celebrated the robust economic, historical, commercial, and human ties that exist between Mali and Morocco. He recalled the recent joint cooperation commission held in Bamako in July, which laid the groundwork for enhanced collaboration across various sectors, embodying the spirit of South-South cooperation.
