Marrakech Transforms into a Hub for Short Film Creators
The enchanting city of Marrakech is set to become a vibrant center for filmmakers as it hosts the sixth edition of the Marrakech Short Film Festival. This year, the festival has attracted an impressive selection of over 400 short films from more than 90 countries, showcasing a diverse array of cinematic talent from around the globe. Kicking off on September 26, 2026, the festival will run until September 30, offering various competitions, outdoor screenings, and talent development programs for emerging filmmakers.
A Global Showcase of Artistic Talent
This year’s festival features a robust lineup of international films, including submissions from countries like Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt, Italy, China, Portugal, Australia, Spain, the UK, South Korea, Japan, and Kazakhstan. The international jury, chaired by renowned Turkish actress Tuba Büyüküstün, includes British director Charlotte Regan, Lebanese screenwriter and director Daniella Stephan, and Alice Kroubi, the programming director for the Cannes Film Market.
Moreover, the Moroccan national competition jury is led by actor and director Rachid Wali, alongside actress and university professor Jalila Talmasi and Hicham Barahimi. This year's edition also highlights Malta as the guest of honor, presenting a special program featuring nine short films that span both narrative and documentary genres, emphasizing the festival's goal of fostering cultural exchange through cinema.
The festival is not limited to film screenings; it will also introduce the "Amanar" platform, aimed at developing projects and the film industry in collaboration with the Arab Fund for Culture and Arts and the British Council. This initiative will include professional meetings, mentorship programs, and project pitching sessions for filmmakers. Additionally, a new program titled "Bridges of Reality" will focus on African documentaries, exploring how African filmmakers share their stories and experiences.
The festival's activities will take place across several prominent venues in Marrakech, including the historic Palais Badi and the French Institute, with outdoor screenings held at Cyber Park. The sixth edition aims to provide a space for short films that transcends mere exhibition and competition, connecting young filmmakers with producers, programmers, and international festivals, thereby expanding opportunities for production, funding, and audience engagement.
