Marrakech-Safi Initiates Tree Planting Initiative
On April 17, 2026, the regional directorate of the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication in Marrakech-Safi officially launched a significant campaign aimed at planting 5,000 fruit trees across various youth centers. This initiative is a collaborative effort with the High Atlas Foundation and is part of the "Rising Roots" program, supported by The Big Heart Foundation. The campaign's primary objective is to promote sustainable environmental projects and enhance youth engagement in environmental protection and the appreciation of green spaces.
Community Involvement and Sustainable Development
The tree planting campaign employs a participatory approach that actively engages volunteer clubs known as "Moutatawi’" along with numerous associative stakeholders, including the Al Firdaous Association for Vacation Colonies and Sustainable Development. The launch ceremony included discussions on the role of youth centers in fostering sustainable development and exploring opportunities within the green economy. An interactive workshop further highlighted programs designed for the youth, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of their environmental responsibilities.
During the event, the first fruit trees were planted at the regional directorate's headquarters, marking the official commencement of this extensive campaign throughout the region. Aziz El Mouatassim, the regional director, emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader movement to strengthen environmental awareness and promote ecological citizenship values, highlighting the benefits of tree planting for air quality and ecosystem preservation. He praised the enthusiastic participation of young volunteers, which reflects a growing interest in environmental issues, particularly given this year's exceptional rainfall, which is seen as favorable for the success of the initiative.
Souad Agnaou, a representative from the High Atlas Foundation, stressed the importance of such initiatives in enhancing the resilience of rural communities against climate change impacts through concrete and sustainable actions. Said Oufla, a beneficiary of the "Rising Roots" program, noted that the initiative encourages youth, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, to undertake socially responsible projects that fully integrate environmental challenges.
This tree planting campaign will gradually roll out across the entire Marrakech-Safi region, with active participation from youth and associative actors, aiming to create a lasting environmental and social impact.
