Marrakech's Sustainable Transportation Initiative
Marrakech is gearing up to enhance its public transportation system with the arrival of 15 new electric buses from South Korea, a significant step towards promoting sustainable urban mobility. The first two buses have already rolled off the production line, marking the beginning of a cooperative project between the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the city of Marrakech. This initiative aims to facilitate the transition to a cleaner, more efficient urban transport system, aligning with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
Details of the Electric Bus Project
According to the South Korean newspaper "Seoul Economic Daily," the initial delivery ceremony took place at the Hyundai Motor manufacturing plant in Jeonju, attended by company officials and Shafik Rashadi, the Moroccan ambassador to South Korea. Besides the electric buses, the project includes the provision of rapid charging infrastructure and a specialized training program for personnel responsible for operating and maintaining these vehicles. This comprehensive approach is designed to enhance technical capabilities in managing electric public transport while fostering an eco-friendly transportation system in Marrakech.
These buses, known as "Elec City," represent Morocco's first locally produced electric buses exported from South Korea. The Moroccan government has set ambitious goals, including a 45.5% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, alongside achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. In alignment with these objectives, KOICA is actively supporting the development of an environmentally friendly public transport system in Marrakech, with the remaining 13 buses expected to be delivered in the first quarter of next year.
