Marrakech's National Festival of Popular Arts Celebrates Its 55th Edition This July

Marrakech National Festival of Popular Arts: A Celebration of Cultural Heritage

The National Festival of Popular Arts (FNAP) in Marrakech is set to celebrate its remarkable 55th edition from July 2nd to July 6th, 2026. This annual festival aims to honor the vibrant tapestry of Morocco's cultural expressions, including sacred dances and ancient popular songs that have been passed down through generations, continually reinvented yet remaining true to their roots. Under the theme "Popular Arts: Treasures of Yesterday and Today," this year’s festival marks a significant milestone, showcasing the living beauty of a diverse people. The organizers, Le Grand Atlas, emphasize the profound significance of Moroccan folk arts, which are infused with life, passion, and a spirit that evolves with each generation while honoring their origins.

The festival will feature a variety of performances that highlight Morocco's rich cultural diversity. Notable among these are the Ahidous dances from the Atlas tribes, characterized by collective movements that sway in unison like trees in the evening wind. The Gnaoua, descendants of a sacred trance tradition from deep within Africa, will captivate audiences with their guembri instruments, stirring deep emotional responses. Additionally, the Taskiwin troupes from the Souss region will display their beautifully crafted daggers, moving in harmony with the rhythmic beats of drums that resonate with the heartbeat of the land. Each region of Morocco will send its finest representatives—showcasing a kaleidoscope of colors, rituals, and tangible memories, allowing Morocco to reflect its multifaceted splendor.

Performances during this year’s festival will grace several iconic venues throughout the city, including the historic Palais Badii, which will host the main show, and the renowned Place Jemaâ Fna, recognized by UNESCO as a masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity. A special tribute will be paid to the beloved artist Zina Daoudia, whose unique voice symbolizes the visceral joy of Moroccan chaâbi music. Mohamed Knidiri, the president of FNAP, poignantly remarked, "When I see a troupe take the stage from the remote areas of the High Atlas or the edges of the Sahara, I witness the guardians of our cherished heritage."
