Widespread Demonstrations Across Morocco
The Moroccan Commission for Supporting the Nation’s Causes has reported the organization of 76 demonstrations under the unifying slogan “Friday for Al-Aqsa and against normalization.” These protests took place on September 25 across 46 cities, including major urban centers such as Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakech, Tangier, Fez, Agadir, Oujda, Tetouan, Kenitra, and Salé. Ongoing Actions and Government Response
In a continuation of the protests, the Moroccan Front for Supporting Palestine and Opposing Normalisation called for national actions between September 25 and 27, which were aimed at opposing the new bilateral relations between Morocco and Israel. A significant march occurred in Marrakech, while protests were also reported in cities like Rabat, Agadir, Benslimane, El Jadida, and Azrou. However, reports from the Moroccan press indicated that authorities intervened to prevent demonstrations in Tangier and M’diq, while security forces surrounded a gathering in Agadir to prevent it from escalating into a larger march. The protests were intensified against the backdrop of a recent agreement made on September 16 in New York, where Morocco and Israel consented to upgrade their diplomatic missions from liaison offices to fully-fledged embassies. This agreement followed a trilateral meeting that included Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, and U.S. Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz, and encompassed plans for expanded direct flights, economic agreements, and reciprocal visits by senior officials.
