SRM Casablanca-Settat's Commitment to Modernization
The Société Régionale Multiservices (SRM) Casablanca-Settat is actively pursuing substantial projects aimed at modernizing the essential infrastructure that serves the residents of the region. A significant investment exceeding 465 million Moroccan Dirhams (DH) has been allocated for the development of the Eastern Reinforcement System (SRE), a pivotal initiative designed to protect the city of Casablanca, particularly its eastern area, from the threats posed by flooding.
This flood prevention system aims to enhance and sustainably strengthen the stormwater drainage network in a rapidly urbanizing area, ensuring it can adequately manage heavy rainfall events. Initiated in February of this year, the SRE project involves the construction of two underground rainwater storage galleries with a total capacity of approximately 45,000 cubic meters. These galleries are being constructed using modern drilling techniques that minimize disruption to traffic, featuring cross-sections of 2.8×2.8 meters and 3.5×3.5 meters, extending over a total length of 3.7 kilometers. They will connect to the existing “Al Qods” and “Hay Sadri” galleries.
Moreover, the project includes the installation of 2.3 kilometers of collectors primarily along the Sakia Hamra Boulevard, with diameters ranging from 1,000 to 2,000 millimeters. Additional components involve the construction of several inspection wells, drop structures, the establishment of overflow systems, and a pumping system. Progress on the construction is proceeding according to the planned schedule, with the entire system expected to be operational by the second quarter of 2027. Ultimately, the SRE will enhance flood protection in Casablanca’s eastern districts, notably in Aïn Chock, Ben M'Sick, Sidi Othmane, and Sbata, thereby improving the overall performance of the city’s stormwater drainage network.
Aligning with Broader Environmental Goals
This initiative is part of the Priority Stormwater Drainage Program (PAPP) for 2025-2030, launched by SRM Casablanca-Settat to bolster the stormwater infrastructure in the region. The program is backed by an estimated total investment of 5.6 billion DH and aims to construct six major stormwater collectors totaling 90 kilometers, with diameters reaching up to six meters. The PAPP is being implemented as part of the National Program for Joint Liquid Sanitation and Reuse of Treated Wastewater (PNAM), co-financed by the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Equipment and Water, the Casablanca-Settat Regional Council, and SRM Casablanca-Settat.
