Milan-Bergamo Airport Expands Summer Schedule with New Direct Flights to Rabat
Milan-Bergamo Airport is set to significantly enhance its air travel network for the summer season of 2026, spanning from March 29 to October 24. This expansion includes the introduction of new routes and an increase in seating capacity provided by airlines. Among the newly announced destinations is Rabat, Morocco, which will benefit from a new direct flight operated by Ryanair starting March 31, featuring two weekly rotations. This development underscores the growing air traffic exchanges between northern Italy and Morocco, reflecting an increasing demand for international travel.
In total, airlines are projecting an additional 1.3 million seats compared to the previous season, bringing the overall capacity to over 13.2 million available seats on scheduled flights. This growth signifies a robust demand for travel from Lombardy, as well as a continuous expansion of the air connectivity linking Italy with regions across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
Strengthening Euro-Mediterranean Connectivity and Infrastructure Development
The first of the new routes will commence on March 29, with Wizz Air launching a service to Skopje, operating four times a week. The following day, the airline will initiate a route to Oradea with two weekly flights. On March 31, Ryanair will simultaneously launch two additional routes connecting Milan-Bergamo with the Greek island of Lemnos and Rabat, further diversifying travel options between Italy and Morocco.
Wizz Air will also introduce a tri-weekly service to Târgu Mureș on the same day, reinforcing its presence in the Romanian market. In April, Norwegian Air Shuttle will begin a service to Billund with two weekly flights, while Jazeera Airways will commence operations to Kuwait City three times a week starting May 20. Additionally, GP Aviation will introduce a bi-weekly service to Pristina on June 19.
Airlines are also planning to increase capacity during peak travel periods associated with Easter and May Day. Ryanair will schedule three weekly flights to Reggio Calabria, while Qanot Sharq will operate two weekly routes to Urgench and Tashkent. Wizz Air will enhance the frequency of its flights to Bucharest and Tirana, accommodating the higher demand during these busy times.
According to Giacomo Cattaneo, Director of Commercial Aviation, Marketing, and Communication at SACBO, the summer schedule reflects ongoing confidence from carriers in the Lombard airport platform and sustained demand for international travel. He emphasizes that the airport is undergoing extensions and improvements to its facilities to manage the anticipated increase in traffic effectively. These investments focus on passenger areas, aircraft parking zones, and operational spaces, ensuring that the infrastructure is equipped to handle heightened activity during the summer season.
Cattaneo concludes that the 2026 schedule illustrates "the enduring confidence of airlines and the strong demand for travel from northern Italy" and that the improvements made will ensure a "high level of efficiency and service for both carriers and passengers." The summer season is expected to reaffirm Spain, Poland, and Romania's prominence among the major international markets served by Milan-Bergamo. In this context of growth, the introduction of the Rabat route enhances the flow of travelers between Italy and Morocco, providing an additional option for business travelers, tourists, and the diaspora navigating between the two shores of the Mediterranean.
