Minor Earthquake Recorded in Meknes
On Saturday, August 1, 2026, the National Institute of Geophysics, part of the National Center for Scientific and Technical Research based in Rabat, reported a "light" earthquake in the Meknes region. The earthquake registered a magnitude of 2.0 on the Richter scale, according to official data gathered by Hespress.
Nasser Jabour, a Moroccan seismology expert and director of the National Institute of Geophysics, indicated that the epicenter of this earthquake was located at a depth of 7 kilometers within the jurisdiction of the "Mhayya" community in the Meknes province of the Fès-Meknes region, situated in the center of the country. He dismissed claims made by some seismic monitoring applications that previously reported a magnitude of 4.8 at a depth of 15 kilometers.
In a brief statement to Hespress, Jabour noted that the earthquake occurred precisely at 7:34 AM local time, emphasizing that it was largely "imperceptible" to the local population. He remarked that such tremors are recorded daily in various regions and often go unreported, adding, "Therefore, there is no cause for concern or panic."
Jabour reassured the public that the specialized services and teams at the National Institute of Geophysics continue to monitor every detail of these seismic events with scientific accuracy and diligence, underscoring that these remain "ordinary light" tremors within a stable and routine seismic activity that has been ongoing for some time.
Earlier on the same day, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) had announced the occurrence of an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8, registered at 7:34 AM. Various seismic monitoring applications also indicated that the quake's center was located in the "Oued Jdid" area, north of the city of Meknes, with a depth of 15 kilometers.
