Recent Arrests in Morocco Target Extremist Activities
On Tuesday, Moroccan authorities announced the arrest of six individuals identified as "extremists" for their alleged involvement in a "terrorist cell" engaged in criminal activities driven by extremist motives. This significant operation was executed between April 5 and 6 by the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ), which operates under the General Directorate of National Territorial Surveillance (DGST). The raids took place in multiple locations across the country, including Kenitra, Casablanca, Dar Guedari, and Sidi al Taibi, as detailed in a statement released by the agency via its social media channels.
The authorities have indicated that these suspects adhered to a principle that legitimizes illicit activities to finance terrorist acts. As a result, they were allegedly involved in "thefts" and "appropriation of criminal proceeds." During the operations, law enforcement seized vehicles, bladed weapons, and manuscripts containing "extremist" content. Furthermore, the agency highlighted that the suspects were implicated in thefts and robberies targeting livestock pens in rural areas, selling the stolen goods to fund their activities. The investigations are ongoing, and all detainees are currently in police custody.
