Moroccan Authorities Dismantle Jihadist Cell Engaged in Theft and Money Laundering

Moroccan Police Crack Down on Extremist Activities

The Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ), operating under the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), has successfully dismantled a jihadist cell comprising six individuals, who are accused of theft, burglary, and money laundering under the principle of "legitimization of loot." This operation underscores the ongoing efforts of Moroccan authorities to combat extremism and criminal activities within the country.

The suspects were apprehended during separate operations across various locations, including Kenitra, Casablanca, the Dar El Gueddari region in Sidi Kacem province, and Sidi Taïbi. During these operations, law enforcement officials seized a range of extremist literature, weapons of various sizes—including cutting and blunt instruments—along with significant amounts of cash in Moroccan dirhams, believed to be the proceeds of criminal activities.

Further investigations revealed that the raids resulted in the confiscation of a balaclava, gloves, and three vehicles, including two vans intended for transporting goods and a motorcycle that was suspected to have facilitated these criminal acts. The arrested individuals, driven by extremist ideologies, had recently engaged in theft and burglary as part of a criminal organization aiming to profit from illicit gains.

The modus operandi employed by the detained suspects involved raiding livestock farms in several rural areas surrounding Kenitra and Sidi Slimane with the intent to steal and loot, subsequently reselling the stolen goods in local markets within the Joumaa Shim commune in Safi province and Zemamra city in Sidi Bennour province. This operation was part of a broader strategy to amass funds to finance future terrorist activities, reminiscent of the Ripoll cell responsible for the August 17 attacks in Catalonia.
