Clarification from Moroccan Security Officials
In response to alarming social media reports suggesting a surge in homicides in Agadir and the Inzegan region, Moroccan security authorities have issued a firm denial. These claims involved alleged multiple killings in specific neighborhoods including Azrou in Ait Melloul, Trast and Dcheira in Inzegan, as well as Al Hassani in Agadir. The police clarified that the incidents under scrutiny are confined to two specific fatal knife attacks that are currently subject to judicial investigations overseen by the appropriate public prosecutor’s office.
The first incident took place on the evening of Eid al-Adha in the Azrou neighborhood of Ait Melloul, where a man was fatally stabbed following a dispute stemming from prior disagreements with the assailant. The authorities acted promptly, apprehending the suspect shortly after the event and placing them under judicial investigation.
The second incident occurred during the early hours of the second day of Eid al-Adha in Agadir’s Al Hassani neighborhood. A 24-year-old individual was attacked with a knife during a confrontation at a parking area. Although the victim was rushed to a hospital, he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter. Authorities have reported that collaborative investigations with Morocco’s domestic intelligence service led to the arrest of the primary suspect in this case, along with the seizure of clothing believed to have been worn by the suspect, which showed traces of blood. Investigative efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend any additional individuals who may have been implicated in the incident.
Officials reiterated that the narratives circulating on social media regarding a wave of killings in the aforementioned areas are fundamentally inaccurate. They underscored that the only incidents being investigated are limited to these two cases and assured the public that all judicial processes are being executed in strict adherence to Moroccan law.
