Moroccan F-16s Participate in Joint Exercise in France

In a significant military collaboration, four Moroccan F-16 jets have successfully landed at the French airbase Orange-Caritat in southern France, marking their participation in the joint air exercise known as Oryx 2026. This exercise, which commenced on September 23 and is set to conclude on October 2, 2026, represents a historic first where Moroccan aircraft will train alongside French Rafale fighter jets from the 5th Fighter Wing. The integration of these two air forces is aimed at enhancing operational cooperation both in the air and on the ground.

The French Air Force has confirmed that crews, mechanics, and air traffic controllers from both nations will work together to strengthen their collaborative efforts during this exercise. This partnership underlines the growing military ties between Morocco and France, emphasizing the importance of joint training exercises in improving air combat readiness.

Impressive Fuel Capacity for Extended Missions

Remarkably, the Moroccan jets flew directly from Morocco to France without requiring mid-air refueling, a feat made possible by their advanced fuel systems. According to reports from the specialized portal Defensa, the F-16s were equipped with additional fuel tanks mounted along their fuselage, which can hold approximately 1,388 kilograms of fuel. Additionally, each jet was fitted with two external tanks under the wings, each capable of carrying about 1,141 kilograms. Altogether, this configuration allowed each aircraft to transport nearly seven tons of fuel, significantly extending their operational range.

Currently, Morocco does not possess its own refueling aircraft for extended F-16 missions, which has necessitated reliance on allied nations for support during international exercises. For instance, during the Marathon 25 exercise held in Morocco, French A330 MRTT aircraft provided mid-air refueling for the Moroccan jets.

Furthermore, to ensure a seamless operation during their training in France, two Moroccan C-130H transport planes were dispatched to deliver personnel, spare parts, and additional materials, thereby securing the unit's presence at the airbase.
