Harsh Sentences for Protestors in Morocco

The Moroccan Association for Human Rights has vehemently condemned the recent rulings issued by the Marrakech Court of Appeal against the detainees from the "Oulad Rami" area, part of the Sidi Issa Ben Slimane community in the Qalaat Seraghna region. The association described the sentences as "harsh," reflecting a continued reliance on punitive and security-based approaches when dealing with peaceful protests. The Court of Appeal upheld an initial ruling that sentenced four defendants to one year of imprisonment, while acquitting a fifth individual who had been on bail, all stemming from a case related to obstructing the enforcement of a court ruling in the area.

In light of these developments, the local branch of the Moroccan Association for Human Rights in the town of Al-Ataouia-Tamalalt expressed its unwavering solidarity with the detainees, their families, and the entire community. The organization emphasized that these sentences are unjustified and serve only to suppress the legitimate right to peaceful protest against the ongoing marginalization and exclusion experienced by the region’s residents.

The human rights branch has called for the immediate release of all detainees associated with this case, the dismissal of all legal proceedings against them, and an end to all forms of harassment against the local population. They urged the relevant authorities to initiate serious dialogues and listen to the community’s demands rather than resorting to security measures.

Background of the Protests

The roots of this case trace back to heightened tensions and protests in the "Oulad Rami" area when the enforcement of a court ruling commenced, which mandated the opening of a road for an investment project linked to a stone quarry. The local residents opposed this decision due to the manner of its implementation and expressed sincere concerns regarding the environmental, social, and direct impacts the project would have on their lands and living conditions. The situation escalated into confrontations between public forces overseeing the enforcement and several local residents, resulting in the detention of numerous individuals who were later referred to the judiciary. Ultimately, the Marrakech Court of Appeal finalized the sentences against them, confirming their imprisonment.
