In a significant legal development, a court in Marrakech has sentenced the well-known Moroccan influencer, Soukaina Janah, popularly recognized by her online moniker "Soukaina Glamour," to a prison term of 10 months. This ruling comes in light of controversial content she shared on various social media platforms, which was deemed to violate standards of public decency.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court has levied a fine of MAD 500, approximately $54, against her and has imposed a three-year ban on her use of social media. The legal troubles began with videos that circulated widely online, which authorities found to be offensive. The investigation particularly focused on a recent live broadcast during which Soukaina displayed parts of her body while promoting her line of homewear. Prosecutors charged that this act constituted public indecency.
The influencer was apprehended on August 12 at Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca, where she was preparing to depart Morocco. Prior to her arrest, police in Marrakech had been conducting an investigation into her online activities and had coordinated with airport officials to prevent her from leaving the country. Following her arrest, she was taken into custody and subsequently moved to Oudaia Prison in Marrakech, where she awaited trial.
This case has sparked widespread debate across Moroccan social media, with users engaging in discussions about the nature of the videos and questioning whether the incident was a genuine mistake or a calculated publicity stunt aimed at promoting her products. Notably, this is not Soukaina's first brush with the law; she previously served a two-year sentence related to the notorious "Hamza Mon BB" case, which involved allegations of defamation and blackmail against Moroccan celebrities.
In 2019, Soukaina was arrested alongside two other defendants, facing serious charges that included unauthorized access to an automated data-processing system, sharing private photos without consent, defamation, and participation in blackmail and threats. She completed her sentence and was released from Oudaia Prison in October 2021, having been identified as one of the individuals managing the controversial "Hamza Mon BB" social media account, notorious for targeting public figures with harmful content.
