Supporters of Senegal Welcomed Back After Pardon from the King of Morocco
The Senegalese supporters who faced imprisonment following violent incidents during the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) 2025 final have returned home to a warm welcome in Dakar. Upon their arrival on May 24, 2026, at Blaise Diagne Airport in Diamniadio, they were met by a jubilant crowd, including members of the Senegalese Football Federation and the President of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye. The Moroccan King, Mohammed VI, granted these supporters a pardon for "humanitarian reasons," allowing them to reunite with their families after enduring months of legal struggles.
These supporters had been convicted by Moroccan authorities for their involvement in the disturbances that erupted during the final match between Senegal and Morocco on January 18, 2025. Following extensive discussions and advocacy efforts, the King decided to release the convicted fans, marking a significant moment of reconciliation. Among those released, Boubacar Diallo expressed his astonishment at the unexpected pardon, stating, "It's a surprise this liberation; personally, I thought I would serve a year in prison." Another supporter, Mamadane Sow, emphasized their pride in representing Senegal, saying, "We went to prison because we defended the colors of Senegal. We thank God; it was our fate. We are grateful to the President of the Republic; it is thanks to him that we are out of prison."
During the airport reception, President Faye expressed his gratitude to the Moroccan authorities, particularly to King Mohammed VI, for their compassionate decision. He reassured the supporters, stating, "I would like to tell the supporters who have joined us today that we endured this ordeal together." In total, 18 Senegalese supporters had received sentences ranging from three months to one year for their roles in the tumultuous finale. Earlier in April, three supporters who had already served their sentences were released, leading to significant outcry and support from the Senegalese public and even government officials regarding the treatment of these fans.
