Legal Concerns Surround AFCON Trophy Celebration
Mourad Elajouti, the president of the Moroccan Lawyers Club, made a significant announcement on Friday regarding the upcoming ceremony dedicated to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy, which is set to take place at Stade de France. This warning is directed towards both Stade de France and the event management company GL Events, as it pertains to a celebratory event for Senegal, coinciding with their friendly match against Peru scheduled for Saturday at 18:00.
The stadium is currently decorated with banners declaring Senegal as “African Champions” and showcasing two stars, a move that stands in stark contradiction to the recent ruling by the CAF Appeals Committee, which declared Morocco the rightful winner of the tournament with a decisive 3-0 victory. The Moroccan Lawyers Club has issued a statement asserting that by endorsing a ceremony that celebrates a title that has been officially revoked, Stade de France and GL Events are accepting direct legal responsibility for their actions.
The lawyers further emphasized that hosting this event could expose these organizations to potential lawsuits for damages, as stipulated under Article 1240 of the Civil Code. Additionally, they pointed out that the situation allows for the possibility of seeking a court order to seize the trophy, as outlined in Article 1961 of the Civil Code. This legal framework provides a clear pathway for action should these entities proceed with the planned ceremony.
In response to the ongoing situation, Senegal has highlighted that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has yet to provide an official communication concerning this matter. Furthermore, they have confirmed that the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has registered their appeal, which effectively suspends any actions by the African football federation until a decision is reached.
