Moroccan Minister Apologizes to Global Community Over Misunderstood Remarks

Minister Riadh Mezour Issues Apology to Moroccan Expatriates

In a recent turn of events, Riadh Mezour, the Moroccan Minister of Industry and Trade, found himself at the center of controversy following remarks that sparked widespread debate among Moroccan expatriates. The minister issued a formal apology, clarifying that his statements, which had been widely circulated on social media, were taken out of context and were not intended to offend the Moroccan community living abroad. During his appearance on the program "Fanjan Ramadan," broadcasted on the platforms of the newspaper "Voice of Morocco," Mezour expressed regret if his comments were perceived as directed towards Moroccans living outside the country.

Mezour explained that the remarks that ignited the uproar were originally aimed at two individuals present in the audience who posed questions that he deemed carried an air of arrogance towards Morocco. This interaction occurred during a meeting with the Association of Graduates from Central Schools and Higher Education Institutions in Morocco. He emphasized that his intention was merely to engage in a lighthearted manner to bring these individuals back to a more grounded perspective, stating that "Morocco is greater than all of us."

Addressing the situation, the minister pointed out that the video clip circulating online had been edited to create a misleading narrative, making it seem as though his comments were directed at all Moroccans abroad. He firmly rejected this interpretation, labeling it "unreasonable" and not reflective of the true content of his speech. Throughout his clarification, Mezour expressed his deep respect for Moroccan expatriates, acknowledging the challenges they face while living away from home, particularly as someone who has experienced life abroad for many years.

Mezour recognized the sacrifices made by Moroccan families living overseas to maintain their national identity and instill Moroccan culture in their children. He also admitted that some of the phrases used during the discussion might have been inappropriate, extending his apologies for any offense caused. However, he reiterated that his primary objective was not to insult the Moroccan diaspora but rather to respond to specific individual viewpoints presented during the dialogue.
