Moroccan Movement Calls for Boycott of Kendji Girac Concerts in Major Cities

Moroccan Campaign Advocates for Cultural Boycott of Kendji Girac

The Moroccan Campaign for Academic and Cultural Boycott has initiated a call to action, urging the public to boycott upcoming concerts by French singer Kendji Girac, which are set to take place in Rabat and Casablanca at the end of April. This movement is fueled by serious allegations against Girac, who is accused of supporting Israel due to his past collaborations with Israeli artists and his participation in events held in Tel Aviv. The campaign's statement highlights the artist's previous media comments, which they interpret as aligning with efforts to promote Israel.

As part of their campaign, organizers are demanding that the producers of "The Unforgettable Show" refrain from providing a platform for Girac, emphasizing that artists who engage with Israeli entities contribute to a process they label as "whitewashing" the actions of the Israeli occupation. The campaigners have warned that they will escalate their actions through peaceful protests and further boycott campaigns if their demands are not heeded.

The group asserts that while art is indeed a universal language, it cannot be divorced from political implications, particularly when it is perceived as obscuring significant human rights violations. They argue that cultural institutions have an ethical obligation to carefully consider the artists they choose to feature, particularly in light of their political affiliations and actions.

Furthermore, the campaign references an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice issued on July 19, 2024, along with a United Nations General Assembly resolution adopted on September 18, 2024. These developments, the campaign argues, provide a robust legal and moral foundation for employing boycotts as a legitimate form of protest and pressure against perceived injustices.
