Moroccan Pharmacists Break Silence and Opt for Field Escalation

Moroccan Pharmacists Mobilize Against Regulatory Changes

In a significant display of discontent, pharmacists across Morocco are increasingly vocal against the ongoing challenges posed by corruption and the systemic issues affecting their profession. The Moroccan Confederation of Pharmacists' Unions has announced plans for a national protest outside the Competition Council's headquarters in Rabat on Thursday, April 9, to oppose what they describe as "dangerous recommendations" in a recent report from the council. These recommendations, particularly the proposal to allow investors to purchase shares in pharmacies, are seen as a direct threat to the integrity and identity of the pharmacy profession.

The confederation's statement following an extraordinary meeting of its national council emphasizes that the situation transcends mere technical advice, reflecting a worrying trend towards covert privatization of a vital sector. This shift could potentially allow financial interests to dominate an area that is crucial to public health and medication security. The pharmacists warn that such changes would reduce pharmacists to mere employees stripped of their independence, leading to economic concentration and disguised monopolization, which threatens equitable access to medication.

Moreover, the confederation highlighted the potential dire consequences of these recommendations, including the risk of bankruptcies among small and medium-sized pharmacies, layoffs of staff, and disruptions within the national pharmaceutical system. Such developments could undermine public trust in pharmacies, transforming them from healthcare providers into mere commercial sales points.

In light of these concerns, the confederation firmly rejects any infringement on pharmacists' independence or the opening of pharmacy capital under any pretext. They assert that these recommendations have been made without consulting professionals or considering the needs of the community, completely overlooking the unique aspects of Morocco's healthcare system. Consequently, they have embarked on an open-ended program of escalating protests to defend pharmacists' dignity and safeguard public health.
