Moroccan Naval Activity Coincides with Massive Influx of Migrants
Recently, Moroccan warships have made headlines by entering the waters of Ceuta, coinciding with a significant increase in migrant crossings. Over 70,000 migrants attempted to enter Ceuta from Morocco through the Tarajal border on July 30 and 31. This situation has prompted a response from the Spanish government, with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez confirming the reports during a press briefing with journalists, including representatives from RTVE.
The Spanish Navy has dispatched a frigate to deter incursions by the Moroccan Navy into Spanish territorial waters. In his remarks, Sánchez acknowledged the tense circumstances, stating, "We must recognize that, between two neighboring countries, such isolated incidents can occur." This acknowledgment came during a gathering at the Royal Palace, shortly after a military parade commemorating Spain's National Day, and just a day before King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia are scheduled to visit Ceuta.
During their visit, the royal couple will pay tribute to those who lost their lives during the tumultuous events of July 30 and 31. Sánchez emphasized that despite recent tensions, the military cooperation between Spain and Morocco remains robust. He stated, "Those were intense days, but the collaboration between the navies is fluid, regardless of the tensions that arose."
Importance of Bilateral Relations with Morocco
The Spanish Prime Minister underscored the significance of maintaining strong relations with Morocco, highlighting cooperation in areas such as counterterrorism and the fight against human trafficking. He described this bilateral relationship as fundamental and criticized opposition parties for advocating a suspension of strategic agreements with Morocco, arguing that such actions could undermine the collaborative efforts established between the two nations. Sánchez’s comments reflect a broader commitment by the Spanish government to foster constructive dialogue and cooperation with their Moroccan counterparts amidst ongoing migration challenges.
