This achievement marks the best performance for Morocco since the inception of the FIFA men's world rankings in 1993. The team, famously known as the Lions of the Atlas, has made significant progress, rising from the 7th position just a month earlier, right before the World Cup commenced. Their thrilling journey to the quarter-finals has garnered them a total of 1803.99 points, a commendable increase of 48.89 points compared to the June edition of the rankings, bringing them perilously close to Brazil, who sits in 5th place with just under a point separating them.
Morocco’s climb surpasses notable teams, including Portugal, which has now fallen to 7th place with 1787.85 points, Belgium in 8th, the Netherlands in 9th, and Mexico rounding out the top ten. At the pinnacle of the rankings, Spain, crowned World Champions, has claimed the top spot with 1995.88 points, followed closely by Argentina, the previous title holders, now at 2nd with 1970.37 points. France and England maintain their positions in 3rd and 4th place respectively, despite their exits in the semi-finals of the tournament.
On the African continent, Morocco continues to lead the pack, followed by Senegal, which has slipped three places to 18th, Egypt at 24th, Nigeria at 26th, and Algeria at 29th. The rankings also saw Norway making significant strides, jumping 12 positions to land at 19th, while Tunisia experienced the most considerable drop, falling 12 places to 57th.
