Morocco Aims to Generate Over 1 Million Jobs by 2026, Says Government Head

Morocco is poised to create more than one million job opportunities by the close of 2026, as announced by Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch during a recent meeting focused on evaluating the nation’s employment strategy. This declaration is part of a comprehensive review of the government's employment roadmap, which has reportedly yielded encouraging results within the labor market.

Recent data shared in the meeting highlights that Morocco's economy generated approximately 850,000 jobs in non-agricultural sectors from 2021 to 2025, averaging around 170,000 jobs annually. Specifically, in 2025, the country witnessed the creation of 233,000 new jobs. If this positive trajectory continues, officials believe that the total number of jobs created could surpass one million by the deadline of 2026. However, it is important to note that this projection does not account for job losses in the agricultural sector, which have been impacted by persistent drought conditions.

Significant advancements have been observed in various sectors, particularly in agriculture and tourism. Agricultural activities have yielded 365 million working days during the current season, marking a 7% increase from the previous year. The tourism sector has also outperformed expectations, generating 92,000 jobs in 2026, exceeding the initial target of 80,000 jobs.

During the meeting, the government also deliberated on initiatives aimed at bolstering small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Entrepreneurs have submitted 170 project proposals under a specialized support scheme, predominantly focusing on the industrial, hospitality, and food service sectors. Out of these submissions, 21 projects have received approval, amounting to investments of MAD 312 million, complemented by MAD 49 million in government support.

Furthermore, officials discussed strategies to enhance SMEs' access to public contracts, thereby amplifying their potential to contribute to local employment. The meeting also addressed the expansion of employment programs aimed at youth, including individuals without formal diplomas. Existing initiatives such as “Idmaj” and “Tahfiz” will be broadened to encompass new sectors, while a new program called “Tadarouj” aims to enhance apprenticeship training across various industries. The overarching objective is to integrate 100,000 trainees into the workforce annually, facilitating Morocco’s ongoing economic transformation.
