Revitalizing Bilateral Relations between Morocco and Greece
On September 7, 2026, the commitment to rejuvenate the bilateral partnership between Morocco and the Hellenic Republic was firmly articulated during a pivotal meeting between George Gerapetritis, the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Nasser Bourita, Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Living Abroad, who was on an official visit to Greece. This marks the first visit by a Moroccan Foreign Minister to Greece in over three decades, underscoring the significance of this occasion.
During their meeting, both ministers expressed their satisfaction with the excellent relations shared between their nations. In anticipation of an impending visit to Morocco by Minister Gerapetritis, discussions focused on drafting a roadmap to accompany this new phase of cooperation, particularly in the economic and trade sectors, investment, green energy, defense, tourism, maritime transport, as well as culture, justice, and consular affairs. To give concrete substance to this ambition, both ministers emphasized the necessity of accelerating the pace of mechanisms for bilateral cooperation and enhancing their effectiveness.
They also stressed the importance of enriching and updating the legal framework governing their relations, ensuring that it meets the evolving needs of both countries. This new phase of the Moroccan-Greek partnership is also aligned with the broader context of Morocco's relations with the European Union. In this regard, the two ministers highlighted Greece's positive role in deepening these ties, celebrating the outcomes of the 15th session of the Morocco-EU Association Council and the launch of the new Mediterranean Pact.
Finally, both officials commended the quality of cooperation between Morocco and Greece within international organizations, emphasizing the constructive roles both countries play at regional and international levels in fostering stability, security, and peace. They also noted the alignment of their efforts in combating terrorism and addressing irregular migration issues.
