Strengthening Military Ties Through Joint Initiatives
In a significant development for international defense collaboration, the first meeting of the Joint Defense Committee between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of India took place in New Delhi on Tuesday, September 9, 2026. This pivotal meeting was co-chaired by Brigadier Abdullah Othmani, head of the second bureau of the Royal Armed Forces of Morocco, and Amitabh Prasad, the Secretary for International Cooperation at the Indian Ministry of Defense. The meeting was attended by officers from India's land, naval, and air forces, as well as officials from the Defense Production Department and the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
According to a statement from the Indian government’s media office, the discussions revolved around a variety of topics of mutual interest, including military training and education, peacekeeping operations, military exercises, medical cooperation, cybersecurity, and defense industries. This comprehensive dialogue underscored both nations' commitment to enhancing their defense relationships as they approach the 70th anniversary of their bilateral cooperation next year.
Exploring New Avenues for Joint Defense Projects
The Moroccan military delegation, led by Brigadier Othmani, is on a visit to India that will continue until September 10. During this visit, they engaged with representatives from Indian defense industries at the headquarters of the public military companies in New Delhi, aiming to gain firsthand insight into India's expanding defense manufacturing capabilities. The Indian government’s media office emphasized that both parties agreed to explore avenues for cooperation in joint production, collaborative projects, technological partnerships, and sustainable maintenance practices. Additionally, the Moroccan delegation is scheduled to visit a military hospital in India to closely observe the country's military medical capabilities.
Last September, Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh visited Morocco, where a memorandum of understanding was signed to enhance cooperation in military training, security, cybersecurity, defense industries, and more. This agreement also established a joint mechanism to track and coordinate collaborative activities between the two nations. During Singh’s visit, the inauguration of the Tata Advanced Systems factory for producing wheeled armored vehicles (WhAP 8×8) in Berrechid was described as a vital step towards bolstering joint production and strengthening the defense capabilities of friendly nations.
The military cooperation between Morocco and India has swiftly evolved from traditional collaboration into a multidimensional strategic defense partnership. Recently, New Delhi appointed a military attaché at its embassy in Rabat to enhance direct coordination on shared defense issues. In a recent interview with Hespress, Indian Ambassador to Morocco Sanjay Rana revealed that advanced discussions are underway between the two countries to expand industrial and defense cooperation, including a proposal for the joint production of a complete aircraft in Morocco.
