Joint Operation Neutralizes Terror Cell
In a significant development in the fight against terrorism, Morocco’s Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ), operating under the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST), successfully dismantled a terrorist cell affiliated with ISIS in a meticulously coordinated operation alongside Spain’s General Commissariat for Information (CGI) of the National Police. This operation took place on Wednesday morning and underscores the ongoing commitment both nations share in combating the threat of terrorism.
The BCIJ reported that the dismantled cell consisted of three radicalized individuals who were operating across the borders of Morocco and Spain. This coordinated action is part of a broader strategy that involves continuous intelligence-sharing and operational collaboration between the two countries, aimed at effectively countering terrorist activities and dismantling extremist networks that pose a risk to the security of both nations.
Arrests and Ongoing Investigations
As a result of the coordinated operations, DGST special forces arrested two suspects in Tangier, while their counterparts in Spain apprehended the alleged leader of the cell in Mallorca. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspects detained in Morocco were significantly involved in providing crucial financial and logistical support to ISIS fighters active in the Sahel region and Somalia. Moreover, the cell’s leader is believed to have been orchestrating plans for a potential terrorist attack in Spain, employing lone-actor tactics that could have resulted in severe consequences.
In light of the ongoing investigation, the two suspects arrested in Tangier have been placed in police custody, where they will remain under the supervision of the public prosecutor responsible for terrorism cases. Authorities are diligently working to uncover the full extent of the network’s operations and its connections both nationally and regionally. This operation not only highlights the effectiveness of the security collaboration between Morocco and Spain but also marks a significant achievement in their collective efforts to thwart extremist threats. Since 2014, through joint operations, more than 30 terrorist cells have been dismantled, significantly mitigating the risks of serious attacks against both countries.
