Strategic Partnership for Military Training
On July 13, 2026, the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces (FAR) and the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) officially signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a new African military training and experimentation center in Tan-Tan, Morocco. This innovative facility, known as the Africa Multidomain Training and Experimentation Center (AMTEC), is set to become operational by 2030 and will encompass a multi-domain training area, a drone academy, and a center for innovation and experimentation. This initiative has been highlighted by AFRICOM in a recent announcement, pointing to Morocco's robust infrastructure and skilled personnel as key factors that will facilitate the rapid transition from concept to operational status.
General Mohammed Berrid, the Inspector General of the FAR and Commander of the Southern Zone, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating that Morocco’s existing capabilities position it as a reliable partner for joint innovations and exports in military technology. His sentiments were echoed by General Dagvin Anderson, Commander of AFRICOM, who noted that this collaboration opens significant opportunities for both American and African defense industries, as well as academic institutions, to innovate and develop scalable solutions for emerging technologies. This strategic move comes in the context of Morocco's increasing role in regional security and defense collaboration, particularly highlighted during General Anderson's Senate confirmation hearing in August 2025, where he underscored Morocco's pivotal position in the new architecture of AFRICOM.
Strengthening Regional Security
The agreement was reached in the wake of a meeting earlier this month in Luanda, Angola, where General Berrid and General Anderson participated in a conference attended by military chiefs from 35 African nations. The conference theme focused on leveraging collective strengths to advance regional security and achieve sustainable prosperity. This partnership not only reflects a commitment to enhancing military cooperation between Morocco and the United States but also signifies a broader strategy to bolster defense capabilities across the African continent.
