Morocco Celebrates CAF's Decision to Award 2025 AFCON Title After Controversial Final

Morocco's Triumph in the 2025 AFCON Controversy

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has expressed its satisfaction with the recent decision from the CAF Appeal Board, which has officially granted Morocco the title of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This coveted championship was previously awarded to Senegal, but following a thorough review, the CAF determined that the procedural regulations had not been adhered to during the tumultuous final match. In a statement released on Thursday, the FRMF emphasized how this ruling not only underscores the importance of following competition regulations but also reinforces the necessary conditions for the proper conduct of international tournaments.

The CAF made its announcement on Tuesday, revealing that Morocco, the runner-up in the final held on January 18, has been awarded the title. The match itself was marred by controversy, as Senegal claimed a narrow 1-0 victory after extra time, a game that had been halted for 14 minutes when Senegal's players and staff protested against a penalty awarded to Morocco in the dying moments of the second half. The Moroccan striker Brahim Diaz failed to convert the penalty, allowing Senegal to secure their win thanks to a remarkable goal from Pape Gueye.

In its statement, the FRMF reiterated its unwavering position regarding the events that led to the match’s interruption, emphasizing the importance of strict adherence to the governing rules. Following the chaotic events of the final, which included a pitch invasion resulting in 18 Senegalese fans receiving prison sentences, Morocco promptly appealed to CAF to overturn the result. Although the initial appeal was dismissed, the subsequent decision from the Appeal Board came two months after the original match concluded. The FRMF stated that throughout the entire process, it acted in accordance with all legal and procedural guidelines, focusing on protecting its rights and ensuring the integrity of the competition.

This ruling not only clarifies the enforcement of regulations but also enhances the credibility and consistency of international competitions, particularly within the realm of African football. In response to the CAF’s decision, the Senegal Football Federation (FSF) has announced its intentions to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, a process that may extend over a year. Furthermore, Senegal's government has raised allegations of corruption in light of this ruling and is calling for an independent international investigation into the matter.
