Moroccan Authorities Intensify Measures Against Illegal Migration

On Saturday, Moroccan authorities detained dozens of illegal migrants, predominantly from sub-Saharan Africa, in a forested area near the border crossing to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. This operation took place amid heightened security measures in the region, just two weeks after a massive influx of migrants from various Moroccan cities into Ceuta, during which approximately 72,000 migrants successfully entered the city, only to return shortly thereafter, according to Spanish authorities.

The migrants, mainly young men from countries in sub-Saharan Africa, with some Moroccans included, had gathered in a wooded area overlooking the border town of Fnideq, just a few kilometers from the road leading to the border crossing. They were intercepted by security forces, resulting in 294 individuals being apprehended, while others fled the scene. A local media report confirmed the operation as "routine," aimed at curbing illegal migration attempts towards Ceuta.

In recent days, social media posts had circulated rumors that the border would be open on Saturday, coinciding with a public holiday in Spain. In response, the Moroccan Ministry of Interior announced on Wednesday that all necessary measures had been put in place to prevent new crossing attempts in light of these rumors, including the arrest of suspects.

Desperate Journeys for a Better Life

Among the detained was 22-year-old Abdeslam Dawood, who expressed his desire to reach Europe, stating, "I want to come to Europe because my country, Sudan, is facing many problems and insecurity." Another detainee, 25-year-old Shams al-Din Yaqub, also from Sudan, shared his perspective on life in Ceuta, expressing hope for better opportunities. "In Ceuta, in Europe, people receive better care. There is no work here. There is no money. There is no housing. There is absolutely nothing, I swear to you," he lamented.

Additionally, Moroccan media outlets, including Le360 and Hespress, reported that authorities had arrested 61 individuals suspected of promoting calls for illegal migration through social media platforms. This crackdown comes in the wake of the recent surge of migrants attempting to cross into Ceuta, highlighting the ongoing challenges and risks associated with migration in the region.
