Morocco Declared Winners of AFCON 2025 After Senegal Forfeits Final

CAF Appeals Committee Rules in Favor of Morocco

In a shocking development, the Appeals Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has made a decisive ruling regarding the contentious final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which took place in Morocco. This ruling has resulted in Senegal being declared the loser by forfeit, thereby granting Morocco an administrative victory and the prestigious title of champions. The Appeals Committee convened to address the appeal lodged by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) and subsequently overturned an earlier decision made by the Disciplinary Committee.

The committee's decision was grounded in the provisions outlined in Articles 82 and 84 of the Africa Cup of Nations Regulations, which highlighted that the behavior exhibited by the Senegal national team warranted a stringent penalty. As a direct result of this ruling, Senegal has officially forfeited the final, with the score now recorded as 3-0 in favor of Morocco. The statement released by the Appeals Committee underscored this outcome, stating, "The Appeals Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has decided, in accordance with Article 84 of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Regulations, to declare the Senegal national team as forfeiting the final of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 ('the Match'), with the result officially recorded as 3-0 in favor of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF)."

Controversial Match Leads to Forfeiture

On January 18, during the AFCON final held in Rabat, Senegal initially triumphed over Morocco with a score of 1-0 in what turned out to be a chaotic match. The game took a dramatic turn when a penalty was awarded to Morocco during stoppage time of the second half, shortly after a goal scored by Senegal was disallowed. This escalation led to several Senegalese players temporarily leaving the pitch, while their supporters attempted to invade the field and threw objects onto the playing surface. Following the missed penalty by Moroccan winger Brahim Diaz, the match proceeded to extra time, where Senegal managed to secure a goal from Pape Gueye, affirming their initial victory.

In light of the Appeals Committee's ruling, the Moroccan federation promptly released a statement to the media. They expressed their acknowledgment of the CAF Appeals Commission's decision while clarifying that their approach was never intended to undermine the sporting accomplishments of the participating teams but was solely aimed at enforcing the competition regulations. The FRMF reiterated its commitment to upholding the rules, ensuring clarity within the competitive framework, and preserving the integrity of African competitions. They also extended their appreciation to all nations that participated in this edition of the AFCON, acknowledging it as a significant milestone for African football. Furthermore, the FRMF has indicated that an official statement will be issued on Wednesday following a meeting with its officials.
