Morocco Detains Journalist Ali Lmrabet Amid Political Repression

Politically Charged Arrest of Moroccan Journalist

The recent detention of Ali Lmrabet, a prominent Moroccan journalist, has sparked significant outrage and condemnation from various human rights organizations. Authorities have justified Lmrabet's arrest by citing multiple search warrants issued against him, according to a statement from the Moroccan public prosecutor, which was released by the local press agency in the early hours of July 14, 2026. Following his arrest, Lmrabet was transported to the headquarters of the National Judicial Police Brigade in Casablanca for questioning. Reports from RFI correspondent Matthias Raynal shed light on the circumstances surrounding the detention.

Hakim Sikouk, the president of the Rabat branch of the Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH), has characterized the arrest as arbitrary. He stated, "Based on the information available to us, Ali was apprehended following several complaints lodged against him by various individuals alleging defamation and the dissemination of false information." This situation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by journalists in Morocco, where freedom of expression remains under threat.

History of Suppression in Moroccan Journalism

Ali Lmrabet is a well-known figure in independent journalism in Morocco, having been living in exile for several years. His career faced significant setbacks when he was banned from practicing journalism in Morocco between April 2005 and April 2015 due to controversial statements regarding the Sahrawis in Tindouf camps. Additionally, he has a history of imprisonment; in 2003, he served time for insulting the monarchy. His latest arrest has raised alarms about political repression in the country. "We are awaiting a statement from the prosecutor to learn whether he will be tried while on bail or if he will remain detained, or if his police custody will be extended," Sikouk emphasized, denouncing what he termed political repression.

Oussama Bouagila, the director of the North Africa office for Reporters Without Borders (RSF), echoed these concerns, asserting that "nothing justifies the imprisonment of a journalist for their professional activities." He reported that while in Tangier, Lmrabet was informed by local police that he could face repercussions for allegedly disseminating false information that could harm constitutional institutions. Bouagila firmly stated that targeting a critical journalist for exercising their profession is not an enforcement of the law but rather a form of political repression. He expressed hope in the Moroccan justice system's integrity and decided to withdraw their appeal for Lmrabet's release.

As per the Moroccan Association for Human Rights, Ali Lmrabet is scheduled to appear before the prosecutor on Tuesday morning, and the outcome of this case is being closely monitored both locally and internationally. The implications of this arrest are profound, as they reflect broader issues of press freedom and political dissent in Morocco, a nation grappling with the balance between governance and civil liberties.
