Morocco's Action Against Extremism
In a significant operation, Morocco's Central Bureau for Judicial Investigations (BCIJ), part of the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance, successfully dismantled a terror cell comprising six extremists. This operation took place over the weekend of April 5-6, 2026, and was prompted by suspicions of the individuals' involvement in criminal activities with extremist motivations, primarily focusing on theft and robbery. These activities were framed by the perpetrators as part of what they termed operations of "spoils and permissiveness."
The BCIJ reported that the suspects were apprehended in various locations including Kenitra, Casablanca, and the regions of Dar Kaddari in the Sidi Kacem province and Sidi Taybi. During the searches conducted as part of this investigation, authorities seized extremist literature, various sharp and blunt weapons, as well as significant amounts of cash suspected to be proceeds from their criminal activities. Additionally, items such as a disguise mask, gloves, and three vehicles—two of which were cargo transporters—along with a motorcycle believed to be used to facilitate these nefarious activities were confiscated.
Investigation and Future Implications
The ongoing investigations have revealed that the suspects, deeply entrenched in extremist ideology, had recently engaged in coordinated criminal efforts to execute thefts and robberies with the intent of profiting from the illicit gains. Their modus operandi included raiding livestock farms in several rural areas surrounding Kenitra and Sidi Slimane, with the stolen goods being later sold in local markets, particularly in the "Jmaâ Sidi Slim" district of Safi province and in the city of Khmiss Zemamra in Sidi Ben Nour province.
The BCIJ has emphasized that the investigations and intelligence operations will continue, aiming to uncover all criminal activities potentially linked to the suspects, explore connections between these crimes and their extremist affiliations, and identify and apprehend additional accomplices. For the purposes of judicial inquiry, the suspects have been placed under police custody while the BCIJ proceeds with its inquiries under the supervision of the public prosecutor's office responsible for terrorism and extremism cases.
