Morocco Doubles Renewable Energy Capacity in a Decade, Wind Power Leads the Charge

Morocco's Renewable Energy Growth Journey

Morocco has successfully doubled its renewable energy capacity over the past decade, achieving a remarkable increase from 2,417 MW in 2016 to 4,851 MW by the end of 2025. This impressive journey is highlighted by the addition of 2,434 MW of new capacity, as reported by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in March 2026. The Moroccan government aims to elevate the share of renewable energy in the national electricity mix to 52% by 2030, reflecting a strong commitment to enhancing energy independence and reducing reliance on fossil fuel imports.

Wind Energy as a Driving Force

Wind energy has emerged as the cornerstone of Morocco's renewable strategy, accounting for a substantial 2,452 MW of the total capacity, a significant rise from just 902 MW a decade earlier. Solar energy has also seen progress, increasing from 202 MW to 1,086 MW, although it remains less dominant than wind. Meanwhile, hydroelectric power has remained stable, contributing 1,306 MW throughout this period. Morocco’s advancements in renewable energy not only boost its energy sovereignty but also position the country as a notable player in the African renewable energy landscape. As of 2025, Africa's total renewable capacity stood at 82,371 MW, with Morocco contributing nearly 5.9% of this total, underscoring its growing influence in the sector.

Despite this growth, Morocco still faces challenges regarding energy sovereignty, with a dependency on fossil fuel imports reaching 87.5% in 2024. Leila Benali, the Minister of Energy Transition, emphasized the vulnerabilities associated with this reliance, noting that fossil fuels still cover a significant portion of the nation’s primary consumption. By expanding its wind and solar capabilities, Morocco aims to reduce its energy costs and buffer itself against fluctuations in international energy prices. This strategic move not only supports economic stability but also aligns with global trends toward sustainable energy solutions.
