Morocco's Strategic Election to the African Telecommunications Union
In a significant development for the nation’s digital landscape, Morocco has been elected to the Administrative Council of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) for the term spanning 2027 to 2031. This decision was made during the 26th conference of commissioners (CPL 2026) held in Abuja from July 16 to 24, 2026. The Moroccan delegation, which was composed of high-ranking officials representing the Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency, and the Digital Development Agency, as well as representatives from the Moroccan embassy in Abuja, played a pivotal role in this achievement.
The Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform released a statement highlighting that this election underscores the renewed trust that member states have in Morocco's contributions towards fostering African cooperation based on solidarity, shared experiences, and collective development. The goal remains to establish a robust and inclusive digital space across the continent. During the conference, the Moroccan representatives emphasized that digital infrastructure, communication technologies, and artificial intelligence are crucial levers for accelerating economic and social transformation in Africa. This aligns with the noble vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, which advocates for mutually beneficial South-South cooperation.
Furthermore, the Moroccan delegation showcased the significant achievements made under the "Digital Morocco 2030" strategy, the roadmap for "Artificial Intelligence Made in Morocco," and the national cybersecurity strategy aimed at 2030. They also introduced several initiatives open to all African nations, including partnerships within the framework of the JAZARI Institutes network and the Sustainable Digital Development Platform (D4SD), developed in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program. Additionally, the "Digital Agoudar Dakhla" project was presented, which aims to bolster African capabilities in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, data centers, and digital services.
Established in 1977, the African Telecommunications Union is the specialized agency of the African Union responsible for promoting the development of telecommunications and information technology across the continent. The union seeks to strengthen cooperation among member states, align policies and regulatory frameworks in the sector, and advocate for African positions in international forums, particularly within the International Telecommunication Union.
