Morocco Emerges as Africa's Top Industrial Economy

Morocco Leads Africa in Industrial Growth

In a significant shift in the industrial landscape of Africa, Morocco has ascended to the position of the continent's foremost industrial economy, surpassing traditional powerhouses such as South Africa and Egypt. According to the latest report from the African Development Bank (AfDB), Morocco now holds the distinction of being the highest-ranked industrial economy in Africa, a remarkable achievement underscored by the AfDB’s 2025 Africa Industrialization Index. This ranking not only highlights Morocco's industrial capabilities but also emphasizes the country’s strategic initiatives over the past decade, which have fostered a robust and diversified industrial base.

For years, South Africa was the dominant player in Africa's industrial rankings, closely followed by Morocco, Egypt, and Tunisia. However, the recent report indicates that South Africa's industrial competitiveness has waned, primarily due to an ongoing energy crisis, sluggish manufacturing growth, and a decline in its attractiveness to foreign investors. In contrast, Morocco's rise can be attributed to a comprehensive industrial policy bolstered by substantial public investments and a commitment to economic engagement across the African continent.

Expansion into High-Value Industries

Historically recognized for its phosphate resources, Morocco has expanded its industrial portfolio to include high-value sectors, particularly automotive and aerospace manufacturing. The automotive industry has emerged as Morocco's largest export sector, with nearly one million vehicles produced in 2025—up from 535,000 in 2023. This impressive growth has enabled the country to surpass China and Japan in terms of automotive exports to the European Union, generating €15.1 billion in export value in 2023. Meanwhile, the aerospace industry is also gaining momentum, contributing over $2.5 billion in export revenues in 2024, with more than 150 companies operating in key regions such as Casablanca, Tangier, and Nouaceur, including facilities linked to major global manufacturers like Boeing and Airbus.

Moreover, Morocco's commitment to developing world-class infrastructure has positioned it ahead of many African nations. Major projects such as the Al Boraq high-speed rail line connecting Tangier and Casablanca, the expansion of the Tanger Med port, and the development of the Nador West Med complex exemplify the country’s ambitious infrastructure goals. These projects are expected to enhance Morocco's industrial capacity and facilitate trade, further solidifying its status as a leading industrial player in Africa.

Nevertheless, despite these advancements, the AfDB reports that the benefits of industrial growth are not evenly distributed, with certain regions and social groups experiencing disparities in access to opportunities. This uneven distribution highlights the challenges that Morocco faces in addressing regional inequalities and ensuring that the economic benefits of industrialization reach all corners of the country. Job creation remains a pressing issue, as the growth in industrial and business activities has not translated into proportional employment opportunities, particularly for the youth and university graduates.

Looking ahead, Morocco is presented with two intertwined challenges: to deepen its engagement in high-value industrial sectors while simultaneously ensuring a more equitable distribution of economic growth benefits. As the country continues on its path of industrial development, it must focus on creating sustainable employment opportunities and fostering regional development that includes marginalized areas. This balanced approach will be crucial for Morocco as it navigates its position as one of Africa's principal industrial economies and addresses the socio-economic challenges that accompany such growth.
