Morocco Emerges as Ireland's Leading Supplier of Green Beans in 2025

Morocco's Ascendancy in the Irish Green Bean Market

In a significant development for the agricultural trade, Morocco has claimed the top spot in Ireland's green bean market, establishing itself as a key player in the global export landscape, as reported by EastFruit. In 2025, Ireland imported an impressive 817 tons of Moroccan green beans, marking a dramatic increase of 2.5 times compared to 2024 and nearly seven times the volume from 2023. This achievement not only sets a new record but also signifies Morocco's inaugural position as Ireland's number one supplier of green beans.

The Irish market has long relied heavily on imports, characterized by strict quality requirements and logistical standards. For several years, Guatemala held dominance in this sector, supplying more than half of Ireland's green bean imports from 2019 to 2024. Other notable suppliers included Kenya and the UK, which were also among the top three contributors. Until recently, Moroccan exports were relatively limited and often reached Ireland through indirect channels, primarily via the UK.

Market Dynamics and Morocco's Strategic Growth

The landscape of the green bean market shifted dramatically in 2024 when Guatemala faced a significant decline in shipments due to logistical issues at the Panama Canal and stricter EU regulations regarding pesticide residues. This disruption prompted Ireland to seek alternative suppliers, which allowed Morocco and Kenya to enhance their direct export capabilities. Additionally, Spain and the Netherlands began to play a more substantial role as re-export hubs, facilitating the entry of Moroccan agricultural products into the Irish market.

Furthermore, Morocco achieved a record in tomato exports to Ireland during the previous season, underscoring its expanding influence in the European horticultural trade. As Morocco continues to grow its agricultural exports, its strategic initiatives and responsiveness to market demands highlight its commitment to becoming a leading supplier in the international produce sector.
